Zwartkops Nature Reserve

Centurion has two perennial streams within its borders, which are utilized for the development of parks and walking trails. Inhabitants can walk the 13 km Hennops River walking trail which starts at the Supersport Centurion Cricket Stadium (South Street) and ends in the Zwartkop Nature Reserve. The route is characterized by lush vegetation and a large variety of bird species. Ample parking space along the route makes it possible to walk the entire route starting at South Street or only certain parts of the route.

The Zwartkop Nature Reserve has been developed on the banks of the Hennops River and is home to several bird and game species. Approximately 400 blesbuck, springbuck, impala, red hartebeest, ostrich and zebra have already been resettled in the reserve. Several walking trails have been developed and the flora has been identified and tagged.

Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve (3,800 ha)

Rietvlei dam was built during the depression of 1929 to 1930, and was completed in 1934. Manual labourers were paid 4 shillings each a month and soil was carted away by mule carts. The dam is fed by the Sesmyl (Six mile) spruit, five springs and five boreholes. Upstream from the dam is the Marais dam which acts as a sludge dam for Rietvlei dam. In 1988 the dam wall was raised.

The nature reserve was opened to the public in 1948, and the dam provides about 15% of Pretoria’s water. The reserve can support up to 2,000 head of game. The reserve is divided into 31 blocks by means of roads and fire breaks, to facilitate burning.

Location: Just off Goede Hoop Avenue (M57), which is off Nellmapius Drive (M31). The Angling and Yachting entrance is off Nellmapius Drive.

Hennops Pride Resort

Facilities: Caravan sites, Camping sites, Fishing, Swimming pools, Tennis courts, Mountain biking, 4x4 routes, Birding, Hiking, Volleyball, Mini golf, Pool tables, Waterslide and Picnic and Braai facilities. The resort boasts 2km of river frontage. 

Location: On the R511, approximately 12 km from the R28 Highway on the road to Hartbeespoort Dam.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve (500 ha)

Proclaimed as a game sanctuary by Paul Kruger in 1895, it was the first game sanctuary declared in Africa.

Facilities: Hiking trails, Horse trails, Night Drives, Mountain biking, 4x4 routes, Car routes, Picnic and braai facilities.

Location: Entrance is from Christina de Wit Road (M18), just North of Kloofzicht.
